In today’s protracted conflicts and increasingly fragile contexts, the traditional approaches and clear distinctions between Humanitarian Aid, Development Cooperation and Peacebuilding no longer meet the complex needs of affected populations. This is why the so-called Triple Nexus links the three sectors, calling for more collaboration, coherence and complementarity. Instead of sequential or parallel responses, the Nexus approach integrates immediate needs with longer-term goals to achieve more sustainable and effective outcomes.

One key factor for implementing the Nexus successfully, is effective collaboration between humanitarian and development actors.* However, everyone who has implemented the Nexus in practice knows that this collaboration can be challenging. The different ways of working, logics and principles of short-term humanitarian relief and long-term development goals can be at odds with one another – often leading to tensions and trade-offs.

What concrete obstacles do development and humanitarian organisations face when working together? What is needed for humanitarian and development actors to collaborate successfully despite their different mandates? And how can they effectively complement each other’s activities? These are just some of the questions we will be discussing with the experts and the audience at our panel discussion.

* Of course, the integration of peacebuilding actors is just as important. However, given the complexity of the Nexus and the time constraints of this event, we are going to focus on the collaboration between humanitarian and development actors.
